      Overhearing a classmate call UNC-Greensboro “UNC-Gay.”

That’s all it took to persuade 17-year-old Jennifer Ruppe to head to Greensboro as a tall school senior in 1997.

“My mom wanted me to proceed to (Appalachian State) and I was like, ‘Snow? Gays? Gays.’ So, (Greensboro) is where I went,” Ruppe said.

After graduation, Ruppe spent the next two decades living in the Triad and working for nonprofits. In 2018, she was named executive director of the Guilford Green Foundation and LGBTQ Center, an advocacy and community center located in downtown Greensboro.

Three years later, in December 2021, the City of Greensboro received its first perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s annual Municipal Equality Index, a nationwide report that examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies and services are of LGBTQ people.

Out of the 10 North Carolina cities included in the index, Greensboro, Chapel Hill and Durham scored 100 out of 100. Winston-Salem, Carrboro and Charlotte were not far behind with scores in the 80s.

      Cary LGBTQ City Guide

Cary, North Carolina, is a stunning, diverse, and growing municipality that is part of North Carolina’s “Triangle” area along with Durham and Raleigh, although it’s somewhat smaller than both of those cities.  Like much of the area, Cary has stunning natural beauty, not to mention a vibrant culture, and plenty of opportunities in various businesses and industries. Even better, it has a smaller, but thriving LGBTQ community where all can feel celebrated and at home. If you’re thinking of finding your next home in Cary, chances are, you’ll find plenty about it to love!

      A Look at Cary's History

In 1750, Cary began as a small settlement called Bradford’s Ordinary. It remained a rather little settlement until nearly a century later when the railroad passed through from New Bern to Hillsborough. The town was eventually named after Samuel Cary who had been an Ohio congressman and prohibitionist that one of Cary’s founders, Allison Page, had admired. In 1871 the town was officially incorporated, and it has been growing steadily ever since. Today, Cary is a diverse, vibrant, and thriving city with so much to offer.
