Kind Communities: Perspectives from LGBTQ+ Young People
On behalf of Born This Way Foundation, Benenson Approach Group conducted 1,001 online interviews with 15-24 year olds across the U.S., including oversamples of Homosexual youth and Black, Indigenous, and People of Paint (BIPOC) from March 24-April 10, 2023. This first release of the record shares direct insights from LGBTQ+ youth and reassesses how communities have been perceiving and experiencing caring taking into account the specific challenges LGBTQ+ youth face in an increasingly divisive United States.
Highlights include:
- LGBTQ+ youth have long been more likely than non-LGBTQ+ peers to rely on an online community to support their mental health, and they increasingly value the ability to divide their experiences online rather than turn online for anonymity.
- Whether in school or the workplace, LGBTQ+ youth are significantly less likely to be in a community where others are kind to them compared to non-LGBTQ+ peers.
- LGBTQ+ students reported an 18% release in feelings of caring in their community in the last six years. The portion of all young people who rate their school or function community as kind has dropped sinc
Fannie Mae Now Collects First-of-Its-Kind LGBT Statistics Through National Housing Survey
With the introduction of sexual orientation and gender persona (SOGI) identifiers in the National Housing Survey® (NHS), Fannie Mae can now survey consumers who identify as Woman-loving woman, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) regarding their attitudes, intentions, and financial circumstances that pertain to housing and mortgage markets. In this first report, we analyzed data poised in 2023.
To align as closely as possible to existing industry data collection practices, including the Census Bureau's Domesticated Pulse Survey, and to provide academia and other housing economists with uniform and readily cross-referenceable data sets, the ESR Group decided to limit its sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) identifiers to NHS respondents who recognize as Lesbian, Same-sex attracted, Bisexual, and Gender diverse (LGBT). For more information on numbers and research on homeownership disparities and disparate treatment for applicants or borrowers identifying as Queer, click here.
Key findings include:
- 8.6% of respondents identified as Woman-loving woman, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) — similar to the Census Bure
How a kind word from Pope Francis inspired my LGBTQ campus ministry
I stood outside the chapel door in anxious anticipation. It was National Coming Out Day, Oct. 11, and my team and I had been working on a student prayer service to commemorate the occasion for months. The programs were printed, with an image of the Consecrated Heart along with a rainbow, the Paschal candle and small tapers were brought out to disseminate the light during the service and the ministers were prepped and ready. All we needed next was people to exhibition up.
I grew more anxious as the start period drew closer and people trickled in the chapel and took their seats. Like many Catholic colleges, the University of Notre Dame, where I completed my undergraduate studies and am currently completing my master of divinity degree, has a complicated history with its LGBTQ students. I wasn’t sure how this prayer service, “Called by Name,” would leave over. I felt supported on campus, and took advantage of the programming offered to LGBTQ students. The university officially sanctioned an LGBTQ student team in 2013, a rare years before I enrolled as a freshman, and LGBTQ alumni formed their own association in 2021.
