Titans issue statement against anti-LGBT legislation during NFL Draft Daytime 3

The Tennessee Titans have a released a statement opposing a bundle of anti-LGBTQ bills in the Tennessee legislature, claiming that the measures could impact the state's ability to secure hosting the NFL Draft again.

Legislation is being considered in the Tennessee General Assembly that would allow child placement agencies to disapprove same-sex couples on religious grounds and another that requires the state's attorney general to defend academy districts determining bathroom use for trans person students. 

The Titans utterance, released through the Nashville LGBT Chamber, unexpectedly came as time three of the 2019 NFL Draft is being disseminate from downtown Nashville:

35 Corporations and 107 Small Businesses Sign Letter Opposing Discrimination in Tennessee

Today, 35 corporations and 107 small businesses released an open letter opposing discrimination against LGBTQ Tennesseans and calling upon lawmakers to not pursue any further harmful bills this legislative session. This letter was organized by the Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce with support from Freedom for All Americans, GLAAD and HRC.

Tennessee legislature passes budget to include deal for novel Titans stadium

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A budget deal that allows the Titans bond and interest money to pay for a new stadium is now approved.

The $500 million package plus a $55 million interest payment for the deal passed both the House and Senate, despite debate from members in both chambers.

The House voted 71-19-3 for the package. In the Senate to reintroduce the bill into the full budget, lawmakers voted 18-12.

An enclosed stadium would cost between $1.9 to $2.2 billion at 1.7 million square feet. Construction would take 31 months, with the expect of completion for the 2026 NFL season.

The Titans said an enclosed stadium would create 15 additional ticket events per year, with $225 million in direct spending compared to the current stadium. With a new stadium, the organization hoped the investment would translate to major events, such as the NCAA Football Playoff, the NCAA Final Four and the NFL Combine.

Gov. Bill Lee originally proposed the $500 million bond contribution for the stadium build after the team announced that the current stadium needed costly repair work.

Texas Lawmakers Neglect Warnings, Push Forward With Dangerous & Extreme Anti-LGBT Legislation

WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest nonprofit of lesbian, lgbtq+, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) civil rights organization, condemned the actions of anti-equality lawmakers in Texas in moving forward extreme anti-LGBT legislation, despite warnings from major corporations, technology leaders, and youngster advocacy organizations of the dangerous consequences.

HB 4105 – a bill that takes conduct aim at stopping marriage equality in Texas – passed through the Residence State Affairs Committee yesterday. HB 3864 – a bill that would enshrine into Texas law special anti-LGBT discrimination rights for child welfare providers based on the “provider ’s sincerely held religious beliefs” – passed through the House Juvenile Justice and Family Affairs Committee last Wednesday. Both bills are part of more than 20 pieces of anti-LGBT legislation being considered by the Texas legislature.

Tennessee spikes bill allowing LGBTQ adoption refusals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee lawmakers on Tuesday spiked a proposal that would have allowed faith-based adoption agencies to reject to place children with gay parents and other families because of their religious beliefs.

The bill had been scheduled to be debated by the GOP-dominant Senate. However, at the last minute, the sponsor quietly asked for the proposal to be taken up next legislative session — essentially killing it for the year. There was no debate or explanation why the bill with withdrawn.

Supporters had argued the bill was needed to protect against potential lawsuits hostile to an adoption group's religious convictions. However, opponents countered the measure would give adoption agencies free reign to discriminate against LGBTQ families, single parents and non-Christians.

Tuesday's developments came as national advocates have raised concerns about a series of Tennessee bills this session that they argue discriminate against LGBTQ individuals, including the adoption proposal and another to prevent government agencies from considering a business's nondiscrimination policies when selecting a contract.
