‘Stranger Things’ Luminary Noah Schnapp on Doja Cat, Season 5, and Will’s Sexuality: ‘He Is Gay and He Does Love Mike’ (EXCLUSIVE)
SPOILER ALERT: This story includes discussion of major plot developments in Season 4 of “Stranger Things,” currently streaming on Netflix.
One of the many thrills embedded in “Stranger Things” has been watching each of the young cast literally grow into young adults before our eyes. That is perhaps especially factual of its youngest imaginative member, Noah Schnapp. His character, Will Byers, has been through it over the years: Abducted into the Upside Down, then possessed by a demonic entity known as the Mind Flayer, and then — perhaps worst of all! — seemingly abandoned by his best friends as they discovered girls and matured beyond their days of playing Dungeons and Dragons.
Will never has, and throughout the recently concluded fourth season, he struggled to articulate to his best friend, Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), why.
From the start, it seemed clear that Will is gay and terrified of coming out. When Variety asked Schnapp and his costar Millie Bobby Brown about it
Schnapp plays Will Byers in Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things – a character who the actor confirmed was “100 per cent” homosexual after season four aired.
On TikTok, Schnapp shared a clip of himself with the caption, “When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know’” while lip-syncing to an audio clip of someone saying, “You grasp what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, will never be that serious.”
In the caption to his TikTok video, Schnapp wrote, “I predict I’m more similar to Will than I thought.”
Schnapp confirmed Will’s sexuality in a June 2022 interview with Variety.
“Obviously, it was hinted at in season one: It was always kind of there, but you never really knew,...
When Robin Buckley came out as a lesbian in ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3, it was one of the most heart-warming moments of the show. Her coming out speech to Steve was beautiful, subtle and thoughtful. It felt like authentic homosexual representation while it also retained Robin’s individual personality. So, naturally, fans of the show expected Will — who has long been hinted to be gay — to be treated with the same respect.
Another reason for these high expectations was the promotional content put out between Volume 1 and Volume 2 of Season 4. During this one month — coincidentally, American Pride month — several official Netflix and ‘Stranger Things’ accounts posted content about Byler (the ship name for Will and Mike). A few other instances include a tweet in help of Byler by Noah Schnapp (who plays Will) and a video in which David Harbour (who plays Hopper) hinted that Will was interested in someone from the main group.
The cast and crew were clearly accepting LGBTQ character ships with open arms. It raised the aspire that Will’s amorous arc would be treated with the same importance given to other characters. Then why was this not reflected on screen?
Will’s Huge Sp Noah Schnapp was stuck in his drafts. The 18-year-old star, who’d become a familiar name on Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” kept putting off posting a video he’d shot on his cell — an announcement he’d been contemplating making for a few months. His closest friends kept texting him: When are you going to post it? I want to observe the world’s reaction! Schnapp kept replying: No, I’m not ready. I’m not ready. I’m not ready. But on Jan. 5, after his family dropped off his twin sister, Chloe, at college in Boston, he felt ready. As they started the hourslong drive back to their home in Westchester, N.Y., he posted the eight-second video to more than 31 million followers on TikTok. At first glance, it looked like other clips he’s made messing around with friends (including “Stranger Things” BFF Millie Bobby Brown): Schnapp, his head on a pillow, lip-syncing to a popular audio clip of someone saying, “You know what it never was? That seriou
