Ucsd gay hookups
Martin Hoenigl, MD, Assistant Professor at The University of California San Diego, has spoken to MedicalResearch.com about a recent study he conducted into gay online dating app users.
The academic investigated the sexual habits of men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) in San Diego, focusing specifically on the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as a preventative measure taken to reduce the risk of contracting HIV.
Previous research has found that men using Grindr are more likely than the general MSM population to engage in risky sexual behaviours.
Hoenigl’s analyze corroborated those findings to an extent, revealing that Grindr users “reported significantly higher risk behavior (greater number of male partners and condomless sex) and were more likely to test positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea”.
Singles on the app were more likely to take PrEP (18.7% vs. 8.7% of non-users), however, and were less likely to have been recently diagnosed with HIV. This may indicate that the user population is taking HIV prevention particularly seriously.
The author added a caveat: “One of the limitations of our explore was that we did not collect data on the usage of other geospatial networking The day has come; Valentine’s Time has once again jabbed its ugly heart-shaped leader into every supermarket, pharmacy, and department store across the country. Everywhere you look, there are symbols of love and passion, celebrations of that extraordinary connection between romantic partners. It can be sappily sweet for those in relationships but, unfortunately, quite a downer for those who find themselves available around this time of year. While Valentine’s Date is catered to those who are “in love,” I bring you something that everyone can love. Love stories are wonderful, but a person’s wildest hookup experience? That’s top-tier entertainment. For this Valentine’s Day edition, I asked a number of students to get real about some of their craziest, funniest, and most unforgettable sexual encounters. For the sake of privacy, some names have been changed, but their stories, and their experiences, are real. “I had sex in the RIMAC gym” (Michael, 20) “I went to this guy’s apartment for a affair and about mid-way through, I realized I was not feeling it. The gay gods must’ve been listening but still wanted to mess with me. Mid session, we overhear Let’s be honest. If you’re queer, you’ve probably heard of Grindr one way or another. However, for those unfamiliar with the app, it’s quite simple. Essentially, it’s an app mainly used by queer men to hookup with other queer men. While it can be used for other purposes, the connotation around the app is centered around sex and sexual interactions between men. On the outside, Grindr may seem to exist for some quick fun, but if we receive a deeper glance into the dynamics, interactions, and normalized behaviors on the app, there lies a plethora of damaging, dangerous, and outright illegal issues that need to be addressed. Whether it’s teenagers existence groomed by other men or individuals using the app to feed into their unhealthy coping mechanisms, the tradition on Grindr, as well as same-sex attracted hookup culture in general, needs thoughtful change. Hookup culture isn’t inherently detrimental. However, it is the type of identity created and perpetuated that makes it extremely damaging, especially to younger users. Unfortunately, grooming on the app is not an uncommon occurrence. While there’s technically nothing illegal about a huge The LGBT Resource Center at UCSD is a diverse, open and public space for all members of the university collective to explore issues relating to sexual and gender identities, practices and politics.
