The Vatican has approved guidelines from the Italian Bishops’ Conference that allow lgbtq+ men to become priests under specific conditions. The guidelines state that lesbian men can be admitted to seminaries and ordained as priests if they are committed to celibacy and do not publicly advocate or align themselves with what the Church terms “gay culture.” This decision reflects a nuanced interpretation of longstanding Vatican teachings on homosexuality and the priesthood.

These directives assemble on a 2016 Vatican document that reiterated a 2005 ban on admitting men with “deep-seated lesbian tendencies” or those who actively support such lifestyles to seminaries. However, the new Italian guidelines recognize that candidates who acquire experienced “transitory” homosexual tendencies or who demonstrate a clear resolve to adhere to celibacy and Church doctrine may be deemed suitable for ordination.

Pope Francis has played a decisive role in shaping the Church’s tone on Homosexual issues, often emphasizing caring and inclusivity. While maintaining the Church’s doctrinal stance that homosexual acts are sinful, he has frequently called

VATICAN Metropolis (Reuters) - The Vatican has approved new guidelines from Italian bishops that allow gay men to enter seminaries as long as they abstain from sex, in an unexpected adjustment to how the global Catholic Church considers possible future priests.

Although the Vatican had not explicitly barred gay men from entering the priesthood in the past, an earlier 2016 instruction had said seminaries cannot disclose men who contain "deep-seated homosexual tendencies".

The new guidelines, posted without fanfare on the website of the Italian bishops' conference on Thursday, say seminary directors should consider a priestly candidate's sexual preferences, but only as one aspect of their personality.

"When referring to gay tendencies in the formation process, it is also appropriate not to cut down the discernment to this aspect alone, but … to understand its interpretation within the whole framework of the young person's personality," state the guidelines.

The Italian bishops said they approved the document in November. The text is accompanied by a note from the Vatican's clergy office, confirming the guidelines as effective for a trial period of three years.

Vatican approves gay men to be priests in Italy — but they'll be barred from 'flaunting' their homosexuality

Homosexual men can educate to become Catholic priests in Italy but not if they "support the so-called gay culture", according to new guidelines approved by the Vatican.

While emoting the need for celibacy, the Italian Bishops' Conference guidelines — posted online on Thursday — accessible the door for queer men to attend seminaries, or divinity schools that train priests.

But they came with a caveat — that those who flaunt their homosexuality should be barred.

Pope apologises for using homophobic term

The pope used the term during a closed-door meeting.

A section of the 68-page guidelines was specifically directed at "persons with homosexual tendencies who approach seminaries, or who discover such a situation during their training".

"The Church, while profoundly respecting the persons in question, cannot admit to the seminary and to Holy Orders those who practise homosexuality, present deeply rooted gay tendencies or support the so-called gay culture," interpret the document.

However, the guidelines say that, when consid

Gay men can turn into priests, as distant as they continue celibate, new Italian guidelines say

The Vatican has given the green light for gay men to become priests - as long as they remain celibate.

In an unexpected adjustment to practice in the Catholic Church, the new guidelines from Italian bishops will allow homosexual men to come in seminaries.

Although the Vatican had not explicitly prohibited gay men from entering the priesthood in the past, an order from 2016 barred men who contain "deep-seated homosexual tendencies".

The new guidelines, approved by Italian bishops, say seminary directors should consider a priestly candidate's sexual preferences, but only as one aspect of their personality.

"When referring to gay tendencies in the formation process, it is also appropriate not to lower the discernment to this aspect alone, but … to understand its essence within the whole framework of the young person's personality," the guidelines say.

It's not clear if the new guidelines will be reflected in other countries.
