June is LGBT 'Pride Month' and Google won’t let you forget it
By Michael Brown, Op-ed Contributor
It is now official, embedded on your Google calendar whether you like it or not. June 1 marks the origin of LGBT "Pride Month," and the only way to remove this observe is to eliminate all holiday announcements from the app. Thus says Google. (If Google did this before this year, I had not noticed it.)
To be sure, Google is consistent in its activism, at least to a point.
Feb. 1 marks the first night of Black History Month, while Protest 1 marks the first day of Women’s History Month. And May 1 is the first day of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, while Nov. 1 marks the first day of American Indian Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

Google's online calendar has removed default references for a handful of holidays and cultural events — with users noticing that mentions of Pride and Dark History Month, as skillfully as other observances, no longer appear in their desktop and mobile applications.
The omissions gained attention online over the last week, particularly around upcoming events that are no longer automatically listed. But Google says it made the change midway through last year.
The California-based tech colossal said it manually added "a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries" for several years, supplementing public holidays and national observances from timeanddate.com that have been used to populate Google Calendar for over a decade. Google has removed Pride Month, along with Black History Month and Holocaust Remembrance Day, from Google Calendar. In an email from Google shared with Newsweek, the company called its previous calendar process "unsustainable."
Google Calendar will now display only public holidays and national observances.
Why It Matters
The move comes amid a broader cultural and political debate about the value of policies on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). President Donald Trump signed an executive order to dismantle federal DEI programs upon his return to office on January 20 and ordered what he called the "Ending Extreme And Wasteful Government DEI Programs And Preferencing."
Since this order, multiple high-profile companies, including Meta, McDonald's, Walmart, Target and Google, possess stepped back from their DEI goals. Critics include expressed fears about Gay rights under the fresh administration, and in particular concerns about the U.S. Supreme Court potentially overturning its landmark ruling that established a right to gay marriage.
