According to 25 USCS § 1771f [Title 25. Indians, Chapter 19. Indian Land Claims Settlements, Massachusetts Indian Land Claims Settlement] the term, "Wampanoag Tribal Council of Gay Leader, Inc." means "the tribal entity recognized by the Secretary of the Interior as having a government to government relationship with the United States. The Wampanoag Tribal Council of Gay Head, Inc. is the sole and legitimate tribal entity which has a claim under the Trade and Intercourse Execute of 1790, Act of July 22, 1790 (ch. 33, sec. 4, 1 Stat. 137) [unclassified], to land within the town of Gay Head. The membership of the Wampanoag Tribal Council of Homosexual Head, Inc., includes those 521 individuals who contain been recognized by the Secretary of the Interior as being members of the Wampanoag Tribal Council of Gay Head, Inc., and such Indians of Gay Head ancestry as may be added from time to time by the governing body of the Wampanoag Tribal Council of Gay Head, Inc.: Provided, That nothing in this section shall block the voluntary withdrawal from membership in the Wampanoag Tribal Council of Queer Head, Inc., pursuant to procedures established by the Tribe. Location of the land holdings of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) (which they notify Âhqunah Wôpanâak) is a federally acknowledged tribe. This means the United States government officially recognizes them as a Native American tribe. They are part of the larger Wampanoag people. Their home is in the town of Aquinnah, located on the southwest clue of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. Every year, the tribe celebrates Cranberry Day.

The tribe gained official recognition in 1987. In the equal year, a ground agreement was reached for their lands on Martha's Vineyard. This agreement was made with the help of the government of Massachusetts and the U.S. Department of Interior. As part of this agreement, the government now holds 485 acres of land in confidence for the tribe. This land includes 160 acres of private land and about 325 acres of common land.

How the Tribe is Governed

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Brain is led by an elected council. This council has eleven members. The tribe also has an honorary tribal chief and a medicine man. These are special positions that are passed down through families and

          Section 1.Name: The entitle of this Tribe shall be the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) [tribe].

          Section 2.Lifetime Positions: There shall be two lifetime positions with the tribe. These shall consist of a Chief and a Medicine Man. Donald Malonson, Chief and Luther Madison, Medicine Man, shall continue to hold these positions under this constitution.

          By Tribal Council: The Tribal Council may, by majority vote of a quorum of the Tribal Council, change the regular meeting date of the next scheduled meeting dine provided that the go out, time, place and purpose of the meeting is posted in a prominent location in the office of the Tribal Council at least seven consecutive working days prior to the date of the meeting and provided further that written notice is sent to each Tribal Council member at least seven (7)consecutive working days prior to the appointment of the meeting.          Section 3.Quorum:. A majority of voting officers and members shall constitute a quorum for the conduct of business at any regular meeting of members of the Tribal Council.

The Band

Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Leader (Aquinnah) is a federally recognized tribe in Massachusetts. Today, the Wampanoag Tribe is governed by a Tribal Council, as was traditionally done. Our Tribal Council consists of a chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary, treasurer, and seven council members, all popularly elected. The Principal and Medicine Gentleman are traditional members of the Tribal Council and contain their positions for life. The Flag

The flag is colorless with tribal seal on it. Issue is that the seal appears in two versions - whale in right or in left hand of the standing Native in front of the Gay Head.
