Why is Mercy so popular with gay men?

Fatonthedole-26871

I am a same-sex attracted man and main Mercy.

I was thinking about why she has such a huge gay following, and then it struck me. You get to glide around like a fairy with a magical fairy wand sprinkling fairy dust everywhere. She appeals to the gay desire to be a fairy.

I cherish playing her so much.

She’s more known for being popular with women. Symmetra is the “gay” hero.

We gays were thriving in the Sym 2,0 era, a factual queer icon.

I don’t share this desire as a fellow gay, but she does appeal to my gay desire to do big fast zooms

I only know a couple of gay men who play Overwatch in our stack group.

Pretty sure they just play the characters they find joy, including just being a killing machine.

The bait is weak with this one…

"The Mercy Stereotype"

ŊǾZǺȐǺŜĦȈ-15881

For Starters Not Every Mercy Main Is LGBTQ Or A Female so let’s go ahead and throw that out of the window. Also not every Mercy main is a boosted Egirl who can’t play any other character. Now the thing is most stereotypes have a little truth to them and the truth in the Mercy Stereotype is that she has the most female and LGBTQ players out of all heroes with D.va being the only one that’s really close. We also have played named like Uwukitten or Pocketh*t

My main issue is that why do we as a playerbase consider that all Mercy players are these people when it reality they aren’t. Why is playing Mercy considered a feminist act when it’s quite simply just playing a character you locate appealing and you enjoy their playstyle? If you can see yourself in Mercy because she’s a doctor and you want to be a healer or you can relate in wanting to support other people than that should be right and not judged. It’s true alot of women around the world perform find themselves in Mercy and that’s why they compete her because they see her as their icon/role model. The Mercy stereotype is so poor that there are gays and females actively avoiding playi

Bold mercy: A gay Catholic’s hopes for a shepherd

I didn’t expect the conclave to hit me this hard.

I’m not someone who typically tracks every move in the Vatican, nor do I fake the church has ever made much space for people like me. But as the white smoke draws near, I discover myself reckoning with wounds I thought I’d elongated buried—and with a prudent hope for what might come next.

I’m a lgbtq+ Catholic, a Boston College alum and a housing developer working to create inclusive, affordable communities for people with and without disabilities. I’m also a lawyer, a traumatic intellect injury survivor and someone who still prays through the pain. These identities don’t cancel each other out. Instead, they coexist, often uneasily, beneath the surface of the alike rosary beads.

The church has been a contradiction in my life—a source of beauty and comfort, and also the origin of some of my deepest traumas. Growing up, I saw how church teachings were used to justify exclusion, cruelty and silence. My queerness wasn’t just misunderstood. It was weaponized against me, especially by those closest to me. I was taught to shrink, to hide, to beg God to convert me.

And yet, I’m still here.

Mercy

October 15, 2023
I cannot be normal after this. It’s one of my foremost reads of the year.

(THANK YOU to the writer for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.)

Mercy is the fantastic story of a cursed angel who has forgotten who (and what) he is falling in care for with the tortured priest that rescued him.

Ilya and Danya are so raw and heartfelt with one another that it almost hurts. Their nurture for another (alongside the chemistry) is palpable and so lovely- especially in contrast to the vile people of their small people.

Ian Haramaki has written a cherish, a god, and a world that is unforgettably tender and magical down to its core. I was barking at the sky and frothing at the mouth the entire time I read this.

CW: murder, death (including dead loved ones), grief, abusive parent (verbal and physical), bullying, explicit sexual content, homophobia, sexual harassment, corrupt church authority figure(s), force, murder
