Case study: Absolut

The American market

Absolut was introduced in the USA in 1979. The aim was high: the American market was not only the biggest in the Western nature, but also the most competitive. At first, the distributors in the USA weren’t as enthusiastic as Absolut’s performance and marketing people. A typical reaction was, “Who would buy a Swedish vodka?” Carillon Importers Ltd., in Recent York saw fine reason: some people don’t want to follow the crowd. Some people admire quality more than others.

After the first bottle was sold in Boston, New York was next. Then came Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco… In just six limited years, Absolut was number one among imported vodkas in the USA. The country that consumes 60% of the Western world’s vodka was convinced.

The vodka is still produced in Sweden, and the 450,000 bottles produced every day are shipped from the petite Åhus harbor to consumers all over the world. And now, 25 years later, Absolut is a household call in quite a few parts of the world. They won over 350 awards with the bottle campaign.

June is here and, for many in the LGBTQ collective and those who support them, that means Pride Month.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month, known simply as Pride Month, is celebrated each June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. Now in its 31st year, Pride Month is known by many for a proliferation of rainbow flags and parades across the country.

In the spirits nature, though, Pride is synonymous with vodka. The neutral soul has been embraced by gay clubs and personalities, including drag performers and disc jockeys whose appearance fees ascend in tandem with the drinks sold at the block. In turn, vodka companies are among the most market-saturating supporters — and, at times, lobbyists — for their LGBTQ audiences.

In this age of influencers and stealth marketing, it’s effortless to wonder if the vodka category’s embrace of LGBTQ culture is legitimate, or just a good way to move product within a community that has some spending power.

Absolut Vodka Rainbow

Limited Edition celebrating the Rainbow Flag.

In 2008, Gilbert Baker, the designer of the rainbow celebration flag collaborated with Absolut to create the limited edition Colors bottle. The collaboration was an expansion of Absolut already end relationship with the LBGT community, which began as the brand was one of the only grand companies in the 80s that would advertise in the pages of LGBT-targeted magazines.

Over the years, Absolut has been always been entwined with the LGBT community, supporting the rights movement through its iconic advertisements, through limited editions including Colors and No Labels, and even sponsoring a TV show featuring the drag star Rupaul.

When Absolut first began operational with the LGBT people, it was far less accepted than it is now. The right movement and general acceptance has come along way in the past 30 years, however, it still has a long way to go. As a carry-on of its support for the LGBT community, Absolut has rereleased the Absolut Colors limited edition.

Available only in United States, this limited edition allows anyone to show their pride.
