Why There Are So Many “First” Gay Disney Characters
It's become popular to construct fun of Disney for having lots of "first" gay characters. From LeFou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast (2017) to Ethan Clade in Strange World (2022), Disney has a short and troubled history of LGBTQIA+ representation. LeFou and most of Disney's early homosexual characters were heavily criticized, but later characters include been better received.
Still, five years after LeFou, The Walt Disney Company announces each new LGBTQIA+ personality in a Disney clip or TV show as some sort of first for them. Even Ethan Clade was a "first." This has led to plenty of memes, which is fair considering the quality of much of the representation. However, despite the mockery, there is a good reason each gay Disney character is considered "first."

Conservative groups hold urged a boycott of Disney over news that the family-friendly studio would feature its first "exclusively gay moment" in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. Director Bill Condon told the British gay magazine Attitude that Le Fou, the bumbling sidekick played by Josh Gad, would be portrayed as a lgbtq+ man. "LeFou is somebody who on one sunlight wants to be Gaston and on another diurnal wants to kiss Gaston," Condon said. "He's bewildered about what he wants."
Following that announcement, evangelical preacher Franklin Graham warned that Disney is trying to "push the LGBT agenda into the hearts and minds of… children." A conservative mommy blogger cancelled her trip to Walt Disney World over the controversy, while an Alabama drive-in has declined to screen the movie. Russia further announced that Beauty and the Beast will be rated 16+ over concerns that the adaptation would violate the country's "gay propaganda" laws.

In a story published by the Tallahassee Democrat, it was reported that a Florida teacher is under investigation by the state Department of Education after what she believes is a targeted attack by a school board member who took issue with a Disney movie shown in her classroom.
