‘Sesame Street’ Reminds Everyone Bert and Ernie Are Not Homosexual or Straight Because They’re Friggin’ Puppets
Updated 1:38 p.m. PT: Frank Oz shot down former “Sesame Street” writer Tag Saltzman’s remarks about Bert and Ernie’s sexual orientation in his own declaration, tweeted Tuesday.

“It seems Mr. Mark Saltzman was asked if Bert & Ernie are gay,” Oz, a longtime Muppets veteran and Bert’s creator, wrote. “It’s fine that he feels they are. They’re not, of course. But why that question? Does it really matter? Why the demand to define people as only gay? There’s much more to a human being than just straightness or gayness.”

Sesame Street pair Bert and Ernie 'will not marry'

The makers of Sesame Highway say characters Bert and Ernie will not wed in a same-sex ceremony despite an online petition calling for the union.

Campaigners say the best friends should marry as a way to encourage tolerance of gay people.

Nearly 7,000 have signed the petition, with more than 3,000 joining a Bert and Ernie Get Married Facebook page.

A statement from the show's makers said: "They remain puppets and do not have a sexual orientation."

But they conceded that the pair are "male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics".

The confirmed bachelors hold lived together for 40 years and sleep in the same bedroom, albeit in single beds.

"Bert and Ernie are best friends," the statement from Sesame Workshop added. "They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very distinct from themselves.

The online petition states: "We are not asking that Sesame Avenue do anything crude or disrespectful," adding, "It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different.&quo

Bert and Ernie are indeed a gay couple, 'Sesame Street' writer claims

Iconic "Sesame Street" puppets Bert and Ernie are a couple, according to a former writer for the show.

In an exclusive interview with with blog "Queerty," Highlight Saltzman said he felt that when he was writing Bert and Ernie, he was writing them as a couple and basing their interactions on his own experiences.

"I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert and Ernie, they were," Saltzman told Queerty. "I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie and I as 'Bert and Ernie.'"

However, Sesame Workshop, which produces the show, denies the pair are together, saying they have no sexual orientation but are foremost friends.

“As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to instruct preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation,” the workshop said in a statem

Sesame Street writer confirms Bert and Ernie were written as a gay couple

A Sesame Street scribe has confirmed that beloved characters Bert and Ernie were written as a same-sex couple, after years of speculation by parents and their kids alike.

Writer Mark Saltzman, who joined the show’s writing team in 1984, said the two characters very much reflected his own same-sex connection with film editor Arnold Glassman at the time.

Saltzman said he didn’t have any other way to “contextualise” the characters as anything but a gay couple.

“I think of one time that a pre-schooler [in San Francisco] turned to her mum and asked ‘Are Bert and Ernie lovers?’ and that, coming from a pre-schooler, was fun,” he said in an interview with Queerty.

“That got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went endorse to it.

“And I always felt that without a vast agenda, when I was writing Bert and Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualise them.”

Saltzman added that many people would refer to himself and Glassman as Bert and Ernie.

“Yeah, I was Ernie,” he said.
