Metal Pride Parade

Today’s venue is located in Montreal’s Homosexual Village (The Village, French, Le Village gai or simply Le Village), which according to Wikipedia, is “the largest in North America in terms of scope of the complete area.” It is Gay Identity festival week. My friends in Montreal tease me. “You complete realize Testament is playing in the heart of the gay district during gay pride week, right?” In the voice of a flamboyant gay theater director, I vocalize out “That’s just fabulous!!!”

All along the club’s entrance on St. Catherine St., black t-shirt clad metalheads with t-shirts brandishing names like ‘Slayer,”Motorhead’ and of course ‘Testament’ are lined up, while a pride of colorful men, some in wigs, many in compact shorts are parading by. One particularly creative group has matching red shorts that say “Keep back 200 feet.” I realize that having a photo of this, the second involving a male rear terminate runs the exposure of the erroneous idea about this blog! But I feel the picture helps capture the message.

In my early teens, I, like many other male boys, was a bit homophobic. The idea of

TESTAMENT's ALEX SKOLNICK: Why I Had To Step Away From TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA

In a recent interview with Sonic Perspectives, TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick talked about how his short-lived involvement with SAVATAGE eventually resulted in him landing a gig with the holiday-themed rock opera TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA.

"It's interesting how that whole situation connected to TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, because the one heavy rock recording I did in the '90s was SAVATAGE [on 1994's 'Handful Of Rain' album]," Alex said (hear audio below). "Which I wish I didn't have to execute it — but it was because Criss [Oliva, delayed SAVATAGE guitarist] couldn't complete the album. And his brother [SAVATAGE singer Jon Oliva] told me, 'Look, I recognize my brother. The only guy he would want playing these parts is you.' How undertake you say no [to that]? It was a really good experience. Within a year or so, I was really sort of on my route towards what I'm doing now. Also, at that show, I was still living on the West Coast, so I just felt, in fairness, for a long-term touring guitar player, they were better off with somebody else. But within a few years, they had morphed into TRA

Why Aren't There More Openly Gay Heavy Metal Musicians? TESTAMENT's ALEX SKOLNICK Weighs In

During a recent appearance on "The Jasta Show", TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick discussed the fact that there are very not many openly homosexual musicians in the heavy metal scene. Saying that "the notion of a singer in a metal band creature gay" was "shocking" prior to JUDAS PRIEST's Rob Halford coming out as homosexual during a 1998 appearance on MTV, Skolnick noted that "it's so cool that it's not a big deal" anymore.

Asked by host Jamey Jasta why he thinks there haven't been more musicians coming out as male lover in the past two decades, Alex said: "I think there's sort of a silent agreement. It's like a 'don't inquire, don't tell' thing," referencing the repealed United States policy on military service whereby gay Americans were permitted to serve in the military as prolonged as they remained closeted. "I think people are cool with it — even the most conservative metal fans. And there are conservative metal fans. I hear from them sometimes. But they contain a seat at the table too. And I think they're cool with it, but they don't wanna hear too much about it. It's almost like

Art Imitating Music

I’ve finally checked out Lou Lou, Loutallica, or whatever you want to call it (actual title: ‘Lulu’)- the ‘stranger than fiction’ collaboration between Metallica and Lou Reed. I’ve been hearing what everyone’s been saying about the album- they don’t like it.

Myself? With the exception of a few parts (the riff on track 2, ‘The View,’ for example), upon first listen, I don’t really like it either. But I acknowledge to being fascinated by it.

Now before we go any further, permit me just say how much respect I contain for the members of Metallica, despite not always agreeing with every community decision. My public comments on the band undertake not always go over well with their fans, who tend to only see me as a guy from another metal band. But I’m honestly trying to speak purely as a listener and observer, so pretend I’m a journalist for one moment.

Here is one way to view ‘Lulu:’ as an experiment in ‘phenomenology’ much like the Andre The Giant sticker campaign by artist Shepard Fairey. It leaves you asking questions like What is it? Is it cool? Are we just not getting
