Last summer, Greenville County Libraries (SC) voted to remove all books about transitioned people or with trans themes from young adult areas in their universal libraries and shift them to the adult collection. This came just months after the board made the identical decision about transsexual books in the youth section. These decisions meant no one under the age of 18 would have access to browsing age-appropriate books with transitioned or gender nonconforming content without explicit parental permission.
These was far from the first brushes with book censorship in Greenville Libraries, which serve the most populated county in the express. Dozens of books have been removed from the libraries as well, nearly all of which feature LGBTQ+ themes. The 59 banned titles–all of which can be viewed here–were available in youth, young elder, and adult sections of the library. At least 50 of the books banned were at the behest of the Greenville County Republican Women’s Club.

Use of HIV prevention treatments is very low among Southern Black gay men

The big idea
Use of antiretroviral treatments to prevent HIV infection – called pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP – is very low among high-risk populations with broke access to HIV take care, especially Black men in the South who hold sex with men. That’s the main finding of our new study, which suggests public health officials will need to perform more outreach to this population if they expect to end the HIV pandemic by 2030.

Greenville library relocates all books with genderqueer themes to mature person section
Greenville County Library Board of Trustees voted on Monday to relocate books with transgender themes or characters from the young individual section to the adult section.
The recent policy is a revision to the collection development and maintenance policy. The board voted 8-3 to move books depicting a personality who has transitioned or is in the process of transitioning from “a gender that corresponds to their physiological sex to a different sex” from the young elder section for ages 13-17 to the adult section.
This includes books with illustrations or themes that “celebrate, portray or affirm gender transitioning whether the changes are social or physical."
Allan Hill, chairman of the library board, said that the revision would allow the library to own “truth in advertising” and wants the books in the juvenile section to be “safe for you to allow your kids read.
“If they come into the library, if they stay in the section that’s appropriate for them, then we don’t think that there should be anything in there that’s not safe for them to be looking at,” Hill said.
