  • ORLANDO, Fla. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A gunman wielding an assault-type rifle and a handgun opened fire inside a crowded Florida gay nightclub early Sunday before dying in a gunfight with SWAT officers, police said. The attack left at least 50 people gone, making it the worst mass shooting in American history.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, claimed responsibility for the shooting, CBS News reports. The terror group's news organization, Aamaq Agency, said the attack was "carried out by an Islamic State fighter."

CBS2's Lou Adolescent was in Orlando Sunday night. He said the area where the shooting happened -- just southwest of downtown Orlando -- was a wide street lined with strip malls, restaurants and stores. It would be a familiar scene to anybody who lives on Long Island or in New Jersey as part of our American topography.

But now, it is the scene of a new American tragedy.

The patrons of the Pulse nightclub first thought the gunshot sounds were part of a show. Then they saw people plummet as the sounds kept coming,

Florida Muslims Express Despair and Frustration Over Gay Nightclub Massacre

    — -- Maged Metwally, 72, fled Egypt as a 20-year-old man in order to make a better life for himself, and now occasionally helps to lead prayers at Stuart Masjid in Stuart, Florida, a small capital 30 minutes from where the shooter in this morning's massacre at an Orlando gay night club grew up.

Metwally, like many other Florida Muslims, condemned the attack that left at least 50 fatalities, and expressed feelings of despair over the incident, telling ABC News that the killer's actions further tainted the reputation of his faith.

"What men enjoy this do is tarnish the good face of Islam," Metwally, an engineer, said of Omar Mateen, the man who pledged loyalty to ISIS as he perpetrated the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. "It's stupidity and ignorance, and it's demolishing our religion.

"It never says in the Koran that it's OK kill people," he said of the religion’s central text.

The Muslim community in his region is "small and simple,” he said, adding that Muslims were always treated with respect by their non-Muslim neighbors, gi

Orlando gay nightclub shooting: 50 killed, suspect is Omar Mateen

Fifty people are now known to have died in a shooting in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the city's mayor Buddy Dyer has said.

The gunman, named by officials as Omar Mateen, was killed after taking hostages at the Pulse club.

President Barack Obama said Americans were united in grief, outrage and "resolve to defend our people" after "an act of terror and an behave of hate".

The attack is the worst mass shooting in recent US history.

A nationwide moment of silence will be held at 18:00 local time (22:00 GMT).

Officials said the killings were likely to be ideologically motivated, though there was no information that the gunman was linked with a particular group.

Orlando shooting: Pulse nightclub was sister's tribute to gay brother who died of AIDS

The co-owner of Pulse, the Orlando gay nightclub that became the scene of the worst mass shooting in US history on Sunday, founded the club to honour her brother who died of AIDS and to help the lesbian, male lover, bisexual and gender nonconforming community.

Barbara Poma, whose brother died in 1991, opened Pulse in 2004 with business partner Ron Legler.

The venue promoted gay rights and supported events in the lgbtq+ community, ranging from Come Out with Pride to Queer Games, according to the club's website.

Pulse's patrons and others in Orlando's lgbtq+ community were reeling on Sunday after a gunman killed 50 people and wounded 53 others overnight in what police said was a targeted, well-planned attack.
